As a former VA Police Detective, I am familiar with medical equipment being stolen from hospitals. However, thiefs have been stealing more expensive stuff such as endoscopes, ultrasound scanners or just the attached probes. Also heart monitors and defibrillators have been stolen.

You can get little locking rings to hold your ophthalmoscope/otoscope heads on. We have 'em. Patients at my ER steal booties, OB pads, emesis basins, linens - you name it. We try to keep everything locked up.

<cite>I said to her, “You know I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you leave them there for now. Who knows? We might need them.” She said okay, and hurried off. I think she needed to get home to dust her otoscope head collection.<cite>

ha ha ha, love it! I always ask my patient who claim to not be able to walk or wipe their ass "how do you do it at home" and answer is always "I do it myself".

This just begs the question: has anyone returned to the ER later with said item found in a gynecological orifice?

Too bad they can't imprint "Property of General Hospital" on the side so once it was removed from the orifice the price of the item could be added to their bill.

And naturally that charge would not be covered by insurance.
